Career & Education
Education is a core mission of IMBA. Scientific research - the creation of knowledge - is only meaningful if it is transferred to others. Here, together with our partner institutes at the Vienna BioCenter, we empower young scientists to break boundaries and make discoveries, while instilling them with our own knowledge and expertise.
Scientific Training @ the Vienna BioCenter
VBC PhD Programme
A flexible curriculum designed for and with PhD students: Diverse seminars and journal clubs occur on a regular basis for trainees to enrich and expand their interests. Additionally, students may participate in several advanced courses (e.g. writing, advanced microscopy, data analysis, etc.) and career development workshops. Each student is free to choose the courses he/she prefers, or can suggest and develop a new course. Throughout their training, students (and postdocs) present their work to the campus community at the Monday Seminars. This weekly seminar series is a great vehicle to share knowledge and expertise between different groups and different institutes. At the same time, the seminars are a great way to obtain compelling presentation skills. Every year, students also organize different activities, including a Retreat and a Symposium.
At IMBA you will find the freedom to pursue your ideas in an encouraging and extremely supportive environment. The research infrastructure enables virtually any research experience. Additionally, in collaboration with the other research institutes, IMBA offers a professional development programme specifically designed to support postdocs transitioning into an independent position and empower them to be pioneers.
Although IMBA does not offer a formal programme for Master Students, most labs host Master Students during their thesis or for placements/internships. If you are highly motivated and fascinated by the work of one of our research groups, then please contact the relevant group leader and enquire about opportunities to join the lab during your Master’s research. Positions for master students are also advertised on this website under “open positions”.
VBC Summer School
The Vienna BioCenter Summer School offers a 9-week fellowship programme for current Bachelor and Master students to develop pertinent research projects. This unique opportunity allows each fellow to develop a research project in one of the groups. Summer fellows are given ample supervision, full access to our facilities, and generous stipends, so that they can be fully dedicated to their professional development. The programme includes the following components:
