IMBA-Senior Group Leader Daniel Gerlich elected new EMBO member

Vienna, 16 June 2017 – As EMBO announced today, Daniel Gerlich – senior group leader at IMBA – was elected to its membership, joining a group of more than 1700 of the best researchers in Europe and around the world.

“Election to the EMBO Membership is recognition of research excellence, and I am pleased to welcome so many great scientists to our organisation,” says EMBO Director Maria Leptin.

In total 65 new members were elected- including 56 EMBO Members residing in 19 Member States of the European Molecular Biology Conference (EMBC) and nine EMBO Associate Members currently working in the USA and Japan.

Newly elected EMBO member Daniel Gerlich graduated with honors from the University of Freiburg, and earned his PhD in Biology from the University of Heidelberg in 2002, working in the group of Roland Eils. After postdoctoral research in Jan Ellenberg's laboratory at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) Heidelberg, he established his own laboratory in 2005 as Assistant Professor at the Institute of Biochemistry at ETH Zurich. In 2012, he moved to the Institute of Molecular Biotechnology of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (IMBA) in Vienna to take a position as senior research group leader. His research focuses on cell division, chromosome biology, and computer vision/machine learning methods for cell biology. Dr. Gerlich received several honors for his work, including a European Young Investigator Award of the European Research Council (2005), an ERC starting grant (2012), and election to the EMBO Young Investigator Program (2009).

Apart from Daniel Gerlich, Josef Penninger, Jürgen Knoblich, Julius Brennecke are full EMBO Members, Stefan Ameres and Kikuë Tachibana-Konwalski were recently elected as EMBO Young Investigators. An online directory with all existing and new EMBO Members is available at people.embo.org.
