Only if you understand how diseases develop is it possible to cure them one day.
The scientists at IMBA share a joint vision: they seek to understand how diseases develop and investigate underlying mechanisms of illnesses. The ultimate aim is to translate this knowledge into novel approaches for further development of new medication and innovative therapies.
Scientific excellence, a unique working environment and international benchmarking are IMBA’s key principles for success.
„Working in the Life Sciences arena with its enormous research potential is the most wonderful job I can imagine. Through our research at IMBA - the Institute of Molecular Biotechnology - the discovery of just one gene could dramatically change the future of medicine. Thus, the knowledge and insights gained in our day-to-day work at IMBA will make a substantial contribution to the medical well-being of our children.”
Josef Penninger, internationally recognized researcher in the field of molecular medicine and genetics, Scientific Director
At IMBA, more than 120 top scientists from 25 countries conduct research in promising and socially relevant areas. IMBA combines the capabilities of the best scientists from throughout the world in 8 interdisciplinary research groups. They focus on diseases like immune disorders, diabetes, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases (e.g. Alzheimer's disease), osteoporosis, obesity and cancer.
“We at IMBA are well aware of our great responsibility towards society. We are working incredibly ambitiously on the development of new fundamental treatments, so that a great number of people will be able to benefit from our insights as soon as possible.”
Josef Penninger, Scientific Director
