Constance Richter, former PhD student in the lab of Jürgen Knoblich and Oliver Schraidt, former PhD student in the lab of Thomas Marlovits (IMP-IMBA joint Group Leader), were selected to receive each one of the annual VBC PhD Awards 2011.

Oliver has been working on the structural dissection of the Salmonella typhimurium type III secretion needle complex. He obtained his PhD in October 2010 and is now a Postdoctoral Fellow at EMBL, working both at the Heidelberg and the Grenoble site.

Constance was awarded for her work on Drosophila brain tumors (see "The tumour suppressor L(3)mbt inhibits neuroepithelial proliferation and acts on insulator elements", 2011, Nat. Cell Biol., 13).

The PhD Awards are granted annually for the completion of the four most successful theses of the previous year. The ceremony marked the final highlight of this year’s VBC PhD Symposium "Think Alternative". The certificate was presented by Nipam Patel of the University of California at Berkeley. The awardees received 500 Euros and the latest book by Renee Schroeder.
