We firmly believe that science is exciting – not just for researchers, but for everybody. After all, the things that are discovered and invented in universities, laboratories and research institutes have a decisive influence over our society’s living conditions and culture.
By providing factual and comprehensible information to the public about the background, the objectives and the results of research work at IMBA, our aim is to encourage the public to engage with basic research in modern molecular biology, and to arouse curiosity about the medicine of the future.
In line with this, our researchers are not looking to withdraw into the often-quoted ivory tower of science, but are instead actively engaged in the public discourse, both via the media and through individual discussions at information events.

Is science really difficult? And what do scientists do in their laboratories? Continually mixing smoking liquids? Those are questions which many children, teens, and also adults might ask themselves. The Vienna Open Lab intends to answer questions like these by providing a practical insight into the work of researchers.

Located within IMBA, the Vienna Open Lab has opened its doors to the public in 2006. Trained experts guide visitors to perform various basic experiments in molecular biology. The hands-on experiments provide exciting insights into the day-to-day experimental work in a life science laboratory. It is run by the non-profit association dialog<>gentechnik in co-operation with IMBA.
