Living in Vienna
Having made the decision to do your PhD in Vienna, you will be moving to a vibrant city with an amazing history and a rich culture. You can spend your free time in museums or galleries, attend the opera or theatre plays, or simply enjoy a night out with friends and colleagues in one of the numerous bars and clubs.
Before your arrival in Vienna you will be provided with the ‘Students Survival Guide’, which contains all the information necessary for starting your life in Austria. This guide comprises all important topics as applying for visas, enrolling at the university or finding a flat. Fortunately, living space is not very limited in Vienna, and whether you prefer the bustling inner city or the green suburbs is completely up to your liking.
Coming from a non-German speaking country, you might be afraid of being able to communicate with Austrian citizens. But don’t worry, most people speak at least some English, and the institute offers free German courses for those who are interested.
