FWF – Austrian Research Fund
The Austrian Science Fund is Austria’s central body for the promotion of basic research. It is equally committed to all branches of science and in all its activities is guided solely by the standards of the international scientific community. Several funding programs are available.
Stand alone projects
Stand alone projects
http://www.fwf.ac.at/en/projects/stand-alone_projects.html
Duration: 36 months
Funding: personnel costs (FWF salary scheme) + consumables + travel
Target group: scientists of any discipline working in Austria
Deadlines: accepted continuously
SFB – Special Research Programs
SFB – Special Research Programs
http://www.fwf.ac.at/en/projects/sfb.html
SFBs are intended to establish research networks based on international standards through autonomous research concentrated at a single university location. They focus on the building up of extremely productive, tightly interconnected research establishments for long-term and interdisciplinary work on complex research topics.
Duration: 8 years, interim review after 4 years decides on continuation
Funding: personnel costs (FWF salary scheme) + consumables + travel
(up to EUR 900.000 per year)
As of 2011 SFBs and NFNs (National Research Networks) will be consolidated as SFB new.
FWF emphasizes the participation of women in research projects. In case the female participation is less than 30% this has to be justified in the proposal.
Deadlines: annually (November 1st) but accepted continuously,
Allocation: once a year in March by the FWF Board based on an international review process.
Doktoratskollegs – Doctoral Programs
Doktoratskollegs – Doctoral Programs
http://www.fwf.ac.at/en/projects/doctoral_programs.html
Doctoral Programs form centers of education for highly qualified young scientists from the Austrian and international scientific community. The program should support centers of excellence at Austrian research institutions and help ensure the continuity and impact of such centers.
A Doctoral Program may only be established at a research institution that is entitled to award doctoral qualifications.
Duration: 12 years, interim reviews every 4 years decide on continuation
Funding: 10 to 20 contracts for PhD students (total; i.e. 1 PhD per partner), 1 to 2 PostDoc positions, a 100 % position for administrative support, as well as money for consumables, travel and other costs
Deadlines: annually (November 1st) but accepted continuously,
Allocation: once a year in March by the FWF Board based on an international review process.
START Program
START Program
http://www.fwf.ac.at/de/projects/start.html
The START Program is designed for excellent young scientists to establish or expand a research group. They should have min. 2 and max. 10 years of postdoctoral experience. It is expected that the applicants prove an excellent track record and publications in international scientific journals.
Applicants for the START Program are obliged to submit a proposal to the ERC Starting Grant as well. In case the applicant is not eligible to apply for the ERC Starting grant (e.g. because of an unsuccessful application to ERC in the previous year) this has to be justified in the START proposal.
It is not possible to submit more than one START proposal per call.
In contrast to the ERC Starting grants there are no restrictions regarding reapplications; i.e. a reapplication in the subsequent year is possible.
Deadline: annually in fall
Duration: 6 years, an interim review after 3 years decides on the continuation
Funding: up to EUR 200.000 p.a.

1 Joint Projects
http://www.fwf.ac.at/en/projects/transnational_funding_activities.html
This program supports funding of closely integrated, bilateral research projects or joint seminars. The application deadlines differ depending on the country involved. In most cases parallel applications are necessary at FWF and the respective partner agency.
Duration: 3 years
Currently FWF has collaboration agreements with the following countries and partner organisations:
- Argentina (CINICET)
- China (NSFC)
- Germany (DFG)
- France (ANR)
- Japan (JSPS)
- Russia (RFBR)
- Switzerland (SNF)
- South Korea (KOSEF)
- Taiwan (NSC)
- UK (ESRC)
- USA (NSF)
2 D-A-CH Lead Agency Projects
http://www.fwf.ac.at/en/projects/transnational_funding_activities.html
D-A-CH Lead Agency Projects provide funding for bi or trilateral research projects with Germany and/or Switzerland. The application for the whole project is submitted to FWF, the German Research Foundation (DFG) or the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), depending on where the largest share of funding is applied for. This funding agency acts as the "Lead Agency" and is in charge of evaluating the application. Applications must be submitted in accordance with the application guidelines of the Lead Agency.
3 ERA-Net
http://www.fwf.ac.at/en/projects/transnational_funding_activities.html
ERA-Net projects support European research co-operations on specific themes with partners from several countries. Projects are usually financed by the respective national funding agency. The application is usually submitted by the project co-ordinator at the co-ordination office of the respective ERA-Net.
Duration: differs, in most cases 3 years
4 ESF EUROCORES
http://www.fwf.ac.at/en/projects/transnational_funding_activities.html
This program provides funding of transnational co-operative projects on specific themes including partners from at least three different countries.
The projects are administrated through the European Science Foundation (ESF) but financed by the respective national funding agency.
Duration: 3 years
