The Vienna Biocenter (VBC) is located in the 3rd district and consists of several life science research facilities. Its focus is on advancing and teaching microbiology, biochemistry, and biocomputing.

The Vienna Biocenter’s success story started in the 1980s with the founding of the Institute of Molecular Pathology (IMP).  Since that time, the campus kept on growing continuously, providing space and infrastructure to various institutions, as the five university institutes, which now form the Max F. Perutz Laboratories (MFPL.

The Life Science Center of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, that houses IMBA and GMI opened in 2006 and today, more than 1400 scientists and students from over 40 nations work at the VBC.

However, the campus is not only home to scientific institutions but also to biotech and medtech companies and scientific communication organizations such as dialog<>gentechnik.

The area of the VBC continues to grow – within the next couple of years it will be expanded by 40 000 square meters. Austria and the City of Vienna will invest 51.7 million Euro in the VBC with a focus on the extension of shared scientific infrastructure that will form the Campus Support Facility (CSF) as well as the Vienna Open Lab and a new child care center.
